Officer Alberto Vasquez was working an off-duty job at the Natchez House apartments, 6200 Marinette, when he and three other officers arrested four drug suspects. As they were being escorted to the apartment office, one suspect, Alex Adams, produced a firearm and shot Officer Vaquez in the leg and head. In an exchange of gunfire, Alex Adams was shot in the leg and Officer R. Duharte in the torso. Officer Duharte survived his wounds as did Adams, the suspect. Officer Vasquez died at Ben Taub Hospital later that night. Alex Adams was charged with the Capital Murder of Officer Alberto Vasquez and received a life sentence.
