On November 2, 1980, at approximately 1:10 AM, Corporal M. Rivers was assisting a fellow officer attempting to arrest two males who fled on foot. Corporal Rivers spotted one of the suspects running through an office complex in the 900 block of Bunker Hill. Corporal Rivers chased the suspect on foot behind a metal warehouse building. Officers arriving to assist Corporal Rivers recalled hearing gunshots coming from behind the warehouse. As they approached the backside of the warehouse, they found Corporal Rivers lying on the ground. Corporal Rivers sustained two fatal gunshot wounds to the head and two other wounds to the right arm and groin area. After reviewing all of the documented evidence, it appears Corporal Rivers was ambushed in the warehouse area. The suspect was later identified, prosecuted and is confined in the Texas Department of Corrections.
