Motorcycle Officer James
B. Irby made a traffic stop near the intersection of Airline and
Lyerly. As Officer Irby was talking to the driver, Carl Wayne Buntion
exited the passenger side of the vehicle. After being instructed
to return to the vehicle, Buntion retrieved a .357 magnum revolver
from the front seat. He
fired several times at Officer Irby, striking him in the head and
torso. Buntion fled on foot and was apprehended in a business on
Lyerly. Officer Irby was pronounced dead at Hermann Hospital. Suspect
Buntion was convicted of Capital Murder and was sentenced to death
by lethal injection.
