Officer Maria M. Groves was diverting traffic around an accident scene in the 10,600 block of the Katy Freeway when an oncoming vehicle struck her. Life flight was called to the scene but Officer Groves died as result of head injuries. The motorist was charged with Involuntary Manslaughter and received a 10 year sentence.
