Auxiliary Captain C.R. Gougenheim and his partner, Officer Jack B. Beets, were checking a tavern’s license at Jack's Place, 3003 1/2 Nance. During the check, Manual Ben Smith entered the tavern, shooting and killing Officer Beets. The suspect ran from the tavern and was confronted by Captain Gougenheim. The suspect fired at Gougenheim, who returned fire. The suspect was hit twice, dying instantly. Captain Gougenheim was hit three times and also died at the scene.
