Officer Ben E. Gerhart was murdered making a routine traffic stop in the 1000 block of the West Loop North. The suspect fled after the shooting and a chase ensued. Later, the suspect exchanged gunfire with police and was killed. (During the chase, Officer Bobby James was involved in a fatal auto accident.)
