Officer Guy Gaddis was transporting two robbery suspects from the 6700 block of Chimney Rock to the Southeast Command Station. While en-route, Edgar Arias Tamayo, who had been handcuffed and searched, produced a Bersa .380 semi-automatic pistol and shot Officer Gaddis in the back of the head and neck. The vehicle crashed into the front of a house with the impact rendering the second suspect unconscious; however, suspect Tamayo temporarily escaped. Officer Gaddis was pronounced dead at the scene. Suspect Tamayo was found guilty of Capital Murder and sentenced to death by lethal injection. The second suspect, Jesus Zarko Mendoza, was convicted of Aggravated Robbery.
