Deputy Constable Micheal Ray Eakin was killed during a traffic stop on September 29, 1998. Deputy Eakin had stopped a vehicle for speeding while he was
interviewing the juvenile driver and passengers for curfew violations, a rear seat passenger fled on foot. Deputy Eakin pursued the suspect and caught him in an adjacent field. The suspect shot and killed Deputy Eakin while the deputy was attempting to place handcuffs on the juvenile. The juvenile defendant was tried as an adult and was convicted and is currently appealing his death sentence.
